Narrative:
While being vectored for an approach to msp, aircraft cleared to deviate as required for WX with associated heavy rain and turbulence. Told to expect ILS runway 12R approach. Approximately 15 DME ssw of field, informed to expect ILS runway 4 approach and that aircraft was #1 for the approach. Given a heading and directed to slow to 170 KIAS. While slowing, encountered heavy rain. While reconfiguring navaids and approach charts for new approach, deviated approximately 700 ft low. Immediately corrected back to assigned altitude. Due to insufficient time to prepare for approach, crew requested to be resequenced. Approach control vectored aircraft for approach and approach and landing completed safely. No traffic or terrain alerts issued or observed. Causes: rapidly changing WX resulting in an unexpected runway change. Crew coordination.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ON VECTOR TO RWY 12R AT MSP, M98 ALERTS FLT CREW TO RWY CHANGE. WX AND BRIEFING COCKPIT CONFIGN COORD RESULTS IN ALT OVERSHOOT. FLT CREW REQUESTS DELAY VECTORING FOR CORRECT BRIEFING AND PREPARATION.
Narrative: WHILE BEING VECTORED FOR AN APCH TO MSP, ACFT CLRED TO DEVIATE AS REQUIRED FOR WX WITH ASSOCIATED HVY RAIN AND TURB. TOLD TO EXPECT ILS RWY 12R APCH. APPROX 15 DME SSW OF FIELD, INFORMED TO EXPECT ILS RWY 4 APCH AND THAT ACFT WAS #1 FOR THE APCH. GIVEN A HDG AND DIRECTED TO SLOW TO 170 KIAS. WHILE SLOWING, ENCOUNTERED HVY RAIN. WHILE RECONFIGURING NAVAIDS AND APCH CHARTS FOR NEW APCH, DEVIATED APPROX 700 FT LOW. IMMEDIATELY CORRECTED BACK TO ASSIGNED ALT. DUE TO INSUFFICIENT TIME TO PREPARE FOR APCH, CREW REQUESTED TO BE RESEQUENCED. APCH CTL VECTORED ACFT FOR APCH AND APCH AND LNDG COMPLETED SAFELY. NO TFC OR TERRAIN ALERTS ISSUED OR OBSERVED. CAUSES: RAPIDLY CHANGING WX RESULTING IN AN UNEXPECTED RWY CHANGE. CREW COORD.
