Narrative:
En route to ocracoke island airport, nc (W95), ZDC could not provide advisories due to the altitude which was driven by the ceiling. I was very concerned about not entering R-5314 or 5306A, so I crosschecked my position by flying over known landmarks: the bridge west of ede and over pmz airport. From there I used dead reckoning to position myself between the 2 restr areas prior to turning towards W95. After about 2 mins, I decided this was a bad plan, did a 180 degree turn, and exited the area to the west. Next time I'll preplan a visual route using standard dead reckoning and pilotage techniques.
