Narrative:

Shortly after takeoff. The purser informed us that the backup navigation system was inoperative and that we would be landing at jfk to have it repaired. We were told to modify the service if necessary to finish in approximately 2.5 hours. During the meal service the plane started to 'buck' violently, flying nose high. Inserts fell from overhead stowage compartments and liquids slushed from their containers. The seatbelt sign was not on. I called the cockpit and was informed that the speed brakes were on in order to increase fuel burn. I explained the cabin situation and asked that the seatbelt sign be turned on. The pilot I spoke to did so and told me they would smooth it out soon. The 'bucking' continued for some time. At no time were we told to stow carts and be seated. We landed at jfk about XD00 and were back in the air in approximately 1 1/2 hours. There was no further incident.
