Narrative:
My student contacted ground control and was told 'taxi to runway 3, hold short of runway 33 at bravo.' the threshold to runway 33 and runway 3 are south of the FBO, so my student left the FBO and proceeded on alpha: this also seemed correct to me. We then made a stop to let traffic pass from behind us and ground then cleared us to 'taxi to runway 3 hold short of runway 33 at runway 27'. This clearance was in the direction we were heading and at that time my student and I both realized that we had not complied with our initial taxi instructions which would have required us to leave the ramp to the north even though we wanted to eventually go south. I guess we both expected to taxi via alpha to runway 27 to runway 3 and had that so firmly in our heads that we didn't realize we were cleared to taxi via a different route. The ground controller never mentioned the problem. I assume because the field was slow and we didn't cause any problems or cross any runways that we weren't supposed to. We should use a taxi diagram, even at our home field.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: C-172 TRAINING FLT TAXIS TO THEIR HOLDING PT USING THE WRONG RAMP EXIT AT FSD, SD.
Narrative: MY STUDENT CONTACTED GND CTL AND WAS TOLD 'TAXI TO RWY 3, HOLD SHORT OF RWY 33 AT BRAVO.' THE THRESHOLD TO RWY 33 AND RWY 3 ARE S OF THE FBO, SO MY STUDENT LEFT THE FBO AND PROCEEDED ON ALPHA: THIS ALSO SEEMED CORRECT TO ME. WE THEN MADE A STOP TO LET TFC PASS FROM BEHIND US AND GND THEN CLRED US TO 'TAXI TO RWY 3 HOLD SHORT OF RWY 33 AT RWY 27'. THIS CLRNC WAS IN THE DIRECTION WE WERE HDG AND AT THAT TIME MY STUDENT AND I BOTH REALIZED THAT WE HAD NOT COMPLIED WITH OUR INITIAL TAXI INSTRUCTIONS WHICH WOULD HAVE REQUIRED US TO LEAVE THE RAMP TO THE N EVEN THOUGH WE WANTED TO EVENTUALLY GO S. I GUESS WE BOTH EXPECTED TO TAXI VIA ALPHA TO RWY 27 TO RWY 3 AND HAD THAT SO FIRMLY IN OUR HEADS THAT WE DIDN'T REALIZE WE WERE CLRED TO TAXI VIA A DIFFERENT RTE. THE GND CTLR NEVER MENTIONED THE PROB. I ASSUME BECAUSE THE FIELD WAS SLOW AND WE DIDN'T CAUSE ANY PROBS OR CROSS ANY RWYS THAT WE WEREN'T SUPPOSED TO. WE SHOULD USE A TAXI DIAGRAM, EVEN AT OUR HOME FIELD.
