Narrative:

C172 was completing a 3 hour cross country flight. Upon arrival to destination, runway assignment was changed to runway 22 from runway 16R. Reported winds provided for approximately 10 KT crosswind component. At wheel impact on runway, sudden wind gust resulted in loss of control. Aircraft veered to right side of runway, and struck taxiway light with tire off of runway surface. No windshear reports noted, no substantial aircraft damage noted. Aircraft taxied to parking with no assistance. Aircraft confign: 70 KIAS, flaps 20 degrees, fuel balanced X2 tanks. Approximately wind conditions: 170 degrees at 10 KTS reported several mi prior to final -- unknown gusts. Human performance considerations: pilot should have refused runway assignment. Controller should not have assigned that particular runway. Pilot should have more carefully monitored wind conditions.

Narrative: C172 WAS COMPLETING A 3 HR XCOUNTRY FLT. UPON ARR TO DEST, RWY ASSIGNMENT WAS CHANGED TO RWY 22 FROM RWY 16R. RPTED WINDS PROVIDED FOR APPROX 10 KT XWIND COMPONENT. AT WHEEL IMPACT ON RWY, SUDDEN WIND GUST RESULTED IN LOSS OF CTL. ACFT VEERED TO R SIDE OF RWY, AND STRUCK TXWY LIGHT WITH TIRE OFF OF RWY SURFACE. NO WINDSHEAR RPTS NOTED, NO SUBSTANTIAL ACFT DAMAGE NOTED. ACFT TAXIED TO PARKING WITH NO ASSISTANCE. ACFT CONFIGN: 70 KIAS, FLAPS 20 DEGS, FUEL BALANCED X2 TANKS. APPROX WIND CONDITIONS: 170 DEGS AT 10 KTS RPTED SEVERAL MI PRIOR TO FINAL -- UNKNOWN GUSTS. HUMAN PERFORMANCE CONSIDERATIONS: PLT SHOULD HAVE REFUSED RWY ASSIGNMENT. CTLR SHOULD NOT HAVE ASSIGNED THAT PARTICULAR RWY. PLT SHOULD HAVE MORE CAREFULLY MONITORED WIND CONDITIONS.
