Narrative:

On a training flight with 2 FAA operations inspectors, I was asked to demonstrate a forward slip to a landing. The C172 poh discourages slips with flaps extended so the confign was no-flaps. From a high approach, I encountered sink masked by the slipping technique. As I changed from forward slip to side slip for the crosswind conditions, the sink increased dramatically. The wheels made the pavement, but the landing was tail low with contact. Correctable factors: the flight was a special testing scenario, but the student acting as examiner took no action. There was some delay on my part expecting him to act. The standard briefing needs modification for these special flts. The cessna poh flap treatment prevents the airplane from being operated in the optimum confign. The runway end windsock is small and in irreparable condition. Aircraft damage was increased from minor to almost substantial by an 8 inch lip at pavement edge. 15 ft shorter and landing gear or at least the gear box would have been destroyed.

Title: A C172 CFI SUFFERS A HARD LNDG DURING A SIDE-SLIP LNDG DURING A TRAINING EXERCISE FOR AN OBSERVING EXAMINER CANDIDATE IN THE R SEAT AT HSD, OK.

Narrative: ON A TRAINING FLT WITH 2 FAA OPS INSPECTORS, I WAS ASKED TO DEMONSTRATE A FORWARD SLIP TO A LNDG. THE C172 POH DISCOURAGES SLIPS WITH FLAPS EXTENDED SO THE CONFIGN WAS NO-FLAPS. FROM A HIGH APCH, I ENCOUNTERED SINK MASKED BY THE SLIPPING TECHNIQUE. AS I CHANGED FROM FORWARD SLIP TO SIDE SLIP FOR THE XWIND CONDITIONS, THE SINK INCREASED DRAMATICALLY. THE WHEELS MADE THE PAVEMENT, BUT THE LNDG WAS TAIL LOW WITH CONTACT. CORRECTABLE FACTORS: THE FLT WAS A SPECIAL TESTING SCENARIO, BUT THE STUDENT ACTING AS EXAMINER TOOK NO ACTION. THE RWY END WINDSOCK IS SMALL AND IN IRREPARABLE CONDITION. ACFT DAMAGE WAS INCREASED FROM MINOR TO ALMOST SUBSTANTIAL BY AN 8 INCH LIP AT PAVEMENT EDGE. 15 FT SHORTER AND LNDG GEAR OR AT LEAST THE GEAR BOX WOULD HAVE BEEN DESTROYED.
