Narrative:
As agent was closing aircraft door for departure, #2 flight attendant handed me a list of cabin write-ups. She said she wanted them fixed at dst, not ord. 1 write-up was a high pitched squeal/air leak from aft cabin door. I told her she needed to have reported the write-ups to the captain on the inbound leg for him to make the appropriate determination of the aircraft's maintenance status. She said in her experience, the leak would be ok and she didn't want it fixed at ord. I decided that rather than deplane all passenger there at ord at departure time, I would investigate the flight attendant's report on my leg and make the appropriate maintenance report upon arrival at destination based on firsthand knowledge. In retrospect, I think it may have been better to have let them handle the write-up. Unfortunately, this flight attendant was not receptive to my urging to not withhold such information and seemed more concerned with not interrupting her ord turn with a maintenance delay. This put me and the previous captain in a compromising position and short-circuited the normal logbook procedures.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: CAPT RPT ON CABIN MAINT ITEMS NOT OFFERED FOR LOGBOOK ENTRY TO PREVIOUS CAPT AT ORD BY ONBOARD 'THROUGH' CABIN ATTENDANT WHO WANTED ITEMS DELAYED FOR ENTRY UNTIL BACK AT HOME BASE.
Narrative: AS AGENT WAS CLOSING ACFT DOOR FOR DEP, #2 FLT ATTENDANT HANDED ME A LIST OF CABIN WRITE-UPS. SHE SAID SHE WANTED THEM FIXED AT DST, NOT ORD. 1 WRITE-UP WAS A HIGH PITCHED SQUEAL/AIR LEAK FROM AFT CABIN DOOR. I TOLD HER SHE NEEDED TO HAVE RPTED THE WRITE-UPS TO THE CAPT ON THE INBOUND LEG FOR HIM TO MAKE THE APPROPRIATE DETERMINATION OF THE ACFT'S MAINT STATUS. SHE SAID IN HER EXPERIENCE, THE LEAK WOULD BE OK AND SHE DIDN'T WANT IT FIXED AT ORD. I DECIDED THAT RATHER THAN DEPLANE ALL PAX THERE AT ORD AT DEP TIME, I WOULD INVESTIGATE THE FLT ATTENDANT'S RPT ON MY LEG AND MAKE THE APPROPRIATE MAINT RPT UPON ARR AT DEST BASED ON FIRSTHAND KNOWLEDGE. IN RETROSPECT, I THINK IT MAY HAVE BEEN BETTER TO HAVE LET THEM HANDLE THE WRITE-UP. UNFORTUNATELY, THIS FLT ATTENDANT WAS NOT RECEPTIVE TO MY URGING TO NOT WITHHOLD SUCH INFO AND SEEMED MORE CONCERNED WITH NOT INTERRUPTING HER ORD TURN WITH A MAINT DELAY. THIS PUT ME AND THE PREVIOUS CAPT IN A COMPROMISING POS AND SHORT-CIRCUITED THE NORMAL LOGBOOK PROCS.
