Narrative:
We were on radar vectors to final (landing 315 degrees) runway 27L, atl. First officer was PF. Approach told us to look for traffic we were following or airfield. We called the runway in sight, and as we were passing through the localizer with no clearance to turn or for visual approach, the controller was still trying to get us to see the traffic we were to follow. At that time, I pointed out to captain that we were going through the course at same time we saw a B757 on approach to runway 26R with which we were converging. Seconds later, we got an RA to descend. At the same time the controller told us to turn back to 230 degrees to intercept and to descend to 2600 ft. I disconnected autoplt and made a steep descending left turn to intercept course and avoid other aircraft. Controller made no mention of overshoot and subsequently cleared us for visual approach. Supplemental information from acn 509277: cross runway 27L localizer, instructed first officer to turn left and intercept localizer.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: B737-800 FLC, ON A VECTORED HDG, FLIES THROUGH THE LOC OF ILS RWY 27L AND HAS A POTENTIAL CONFLICT WITH A B757 ON APCH TO RWY 26R AT ATL, GA.
Narrative: WE WERE ON RADAR VECTORS TO FINAL (LNDG 315 DEGS) RWY 27L, ATL. FO WAS PF. APCH TOLD US TO LOOK FOR TFC WE WERE FOLLOWING OR AIRFIELD. WE CALLED THE RWY IN SIGHT, AND AS WE WERE PASSING THROUGH THE LOC WITH NO CLRNC TO TURN OR FOR VISUAL APCH, THE CTLR WAS STILL TRYING TO GET US TO SEE THE TFC WE WERE TO FOLLOW. AT THAT TIME, I POINTED OUT TO CAPT THAT WE WERE GOING THROUGH THE COURSE AT SAME TIME WE SAW A B757 ON APCH TO RWY 26R WITH WHICH WE WERE CONVERGING. SECONDS LATER, WE GOT AN RA TO DSND. AT THE SAME TIME THE CTLR TOLD US TO TURN BACK TO 230 DEGS TO INTERCEPT AND TO DSND TO 2600 FT. I DISCONNECTED AUTOPLT AND MADE A STEEP DSNDING L TURN TO INTERCEPT COURSE AND AVOID OTHER ACFT. CTLR MADE NO MENTION OF OVERSHOOT AND SUBSEQUENTLY CLRED US FOR VISUAL APCH. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 509277: CROSS RWY 27L LOC, INSTRUCTED FO TO TURN L AND INTERCEPT LOC.
