Narrative:
Crew was issued instructions to taxi to position S1 for runway 8L. No specific instructions were issued so we taxied via F - U - north - W2 - W1 - S1. We stopped short of runway 8L at S1, but saw no runway hold short markings. Tower had aircraft on final for runway 8L go around because they felt we were too close to runway. The txwys at cdg are some of the most confusing in the world. Ground controllers rarely issue detailed taxi instructions. You are expected to taxi on your own using taxi charts. Singage is limited and inadequate. There was no sign indicating runway 8L at S1.
