Narrative:
During takeoff, at about 300 ft AGL, 1, 2, or 3 large birds were ingested into the left engine. At about 500 ft AGL, smoke started to enter flight deck and cabin. Emergency was declared. Left pack was turned off (smoke stopped). Engine failure checklists were accomplished,. Normal landing was accomplished on runway 21R dtw with equipment standing by. After inspection by fire department, aircraft taxied to gate. Passenger deplaned.

Title: B757-200 HAD BIRD STRIKE IN #1 ENG DEPARTING DTW.
Narrative: DURING TKOF, AT ABOUT 300 FT AGL, 1, 2, OR 3 LARGE BIRDS WERE INGESTED INTO THE L ENG. AT ABOUT 500 FT AGL, SMOKE STARTED TO ENTER FLT DECK AND CABIN. EMER WAS DECLARED. L PACK WAS TURNED OFF (SMOKE STOPPED). ENG FAILURE CHKLISTS WERE ACCOMPLISHED,. NORMAL LNDG WAS ACCOMPLISHED ON RWY 21R DTW WITH EQUIP STANDING BY. AFTER INSPECTION BY FIRE DEPT, ACFT TAXIED TO GATE.
