Narrative:
Tower offered intersecting runway departure on runway 36 at taxiway C, due to aircraft at outer marker for runway 32L. Tower instructed me to make a hard right and cleared for departure on runway 36. I had my airport diagram next to me and had been consulting it. Since I was turning for the runway and departing at the same time I was unable to immediately verify runway heading with my directional gyro. Tower advised me that I was on the wrong runway and stated 'I need you off that runway.' I aborted my takeoff and departed runway 32L at taxiway west. The aircraft on final asked the tower what he wanted them to do and the tower advised the aircraft to go around and get resequenced. Additional factors were that there was an aircraft on taxiway F between runways 32L and 36 and I had only been to this airport one other time. There are numerous constructions in progress at the airport. I was not pressed for time and should not have accepted the tower's offer for the amended departure. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the reporter indicated in the callback that he now sees the merit in sticking to the original plan instead of allowing himself to be sucked into the never ending effort to keep traffic moving at someone else's pace.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: APCHING THE INTERSECTION OF TWO INTERSECTING RWYS, A PLT IS OFFERED AN INTERSECTION TAKEOFF. HE ACCEPTS AND THEN TAKES OFF ON THE WRONG RWY.
Narrative: TWR OFFERED INTERSECTING RWY DEP ON RWY 36 AT TXWY C, DUE TO ACFT AT OUTER MARKER FOR RWY 32L. TWR INSTRUCTED ME TO MAKE A HARD R AND CLRED FOR DEP ON RWY 36. I HAD MY ARPT DIAGRAM NEXT TO ME AND HAD BEEN CONSULTING IT. SINCE I WAS TURNING FOR THE RWY AND DEPARTING AT THE SAME TIME I WAS UNABLE TO IMMEDIATELY VERIFY RWY HEADING WITH MY DIRECTIONAL GYRO. TWR ADVISED ME THAT I WAS ON THE WRONG RWY AND STATED 'I NEED YOU OFF THAT RWY.' I ABORTED MY TAKEOFF AND DEPARTED RWY 32L AT TXWY W. THE ACFT ON FINAL ASKED THE TWR WHAT HE WANTED THEM TO DO AND THE TWR ADVISED THE ACFT TO GAR AND GET RESEQUENCED. ADDITIONAL FACTORS WERE THAT THERE WAS AN ACFT ON TXWY F BETWEEN RWYS 32L AND 36 AND I HAD ONLY BEEN TO THIS ARPT ONE OTHER TIME. THERE ARE NUMEROUS CONSTRUCTIONS IN PROGRESS AT THE ARPT. I WAS NOT PRESSED FOR TIME AND SHOULD NOT HAVE ACCEPTED THE TWR'S OFFER FOR THE AMENDED DEP. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR INDICATED IN THE CALLBACK THAT HE NOW SEES THE MERIT IN STICKING TO THE ORIGINAL PLAN INSTEAD OF ALLOWING HIMSELF TO BE SUCKED INTO THE NEVER ENDING EFFORT TO KEEP TFC MOVING AT SOMEONE ELSE'S PACE.
