Air Traffic Incident | Operational Error |
Narrative:
Vectored aircraft X too close behind traffic turning onto runway 21L final. Additional traffic turning to runway 21R final (DC9, aircraft Z). Got a TA on saab (aircraft Y) low and left. Started to move up and away as TA turned to RA. Got an immediate RA on DC9 runway 21R traffic up and right. Acquired both aircraft visually. Maintained separation and requested landing on runway 21C. Landing was uneventful. We were sandwiched by ATC. The third aircraft was an air carrier Z DC9. They saw this situation grow and took evasive moves soonest. Supplemental information from acn 512810: when we (aircraft X) were clear of all maneuvering, we were 2 mi behind turboprop (aircraft Y) and closing on him. It was obvious that approach sandwiched us into an impossible situation. Delaying our clearance which caused us to threaten the approachs on runway 21R. We came no closer than 1 1/2 NM of any aircraft. All aircraft were in sight and no unusual or violent maneuvering was required.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: DC9, CLRED FOR APCH TO DTW RWY 21L, TAKES ACTION TO AVOID AN SF34 TURNING INSIDE THE CLRED DC9, WHILE ANOTHER DC9 INITIATES A MANEUVER TO AVOID THE 2 MANEUVERING ACFT.
Narrative: VECTORED ACFT X TOO CLOSE BEHIND TFC TURNING ONTO RWY 21L FINAL. ADDITIONAL TFC TURNING TO RWY 21R FINAL (DC9, ACFT Z). GOT A TA ON SAAB (ACFT Y) LOW AND L. STARTED TO MOVE UP AND AWAY AS TA TURNED TO RA. GOT AN IMMEDIATE RA ON DC9 RWY 21R TFC UP AND R. ACQUIRED BOTH ACFT VISUALLY. MAINTAINED SEPARATION AND REQUESTED LNDG ON RWY 21C. LNDG WAS UNEVENTFUL. WE WERE SANDWICHED BY ATC. THE THIRD ACFT WAS AN ACR Z DC9. THEY SAW THIS SIT GROW AND TOOK EVASIVE MOVES SOONEST. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 512810: WHEN WE (ACFT X) WERE CLR OF ALL MANEUVERING, WE WERE 2 MI BEHIND TURBOPROP (ACFT Y) AND CLOSING ON HIM. IT WAS OBVIOUS THAT APCH SANDWICHED US INTO AN IMPOSSIBLE SIT. DELAYING OUR CLRNC WHICH CAUSED US TO THREATEN THE APCHS ON RWY 21R. WE CAME NO CLOSER THAN 1 1/2 NM OF ANY ACFT. ALL ACFT WERE IN SIGHT AND NO UNUSUAL OR VIOLENT MANEUVERING WAS REQUIRED.
