Narrative:
While on vector for runway 22L ord, became distracted in attempting to identify isl runway 22L localizer and temporarily (2 mins or less) lost contact with ord approach. VHF communication 1 xfer switch somehow inadvertently placed to tower frequency. Because of distraction with identifying localizer we continued on assigned heading which took us through the localizer on 340 degree heading at 3000 ft MSL assigned. We discovered the error when we recognized that we were on tower-aircraft communication and were advised of TA (air carrier Y MD8O on final for runway 22L.) closest pt 3 NM 900 ft MSL. Recontacted ord approach and was vectored back to ILS runway 22L. Causes: 1) inadvertently transferred VHF communication 1 to preselected tower frequency 2) becoming distracted by wrong identify (runway 4) for runway 22L localizer, to the pt of not recognizing that radio transmissions for communication 1 were tower, not approach control and taking timely corrective action.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: POTENTIAL CONFLICT OCCURS WHEN A DISTRACTED MD-80 INADVERTENTLY SWITCHES TO TWR WHEN STILL UNDER APCH CTL JURISDICTION, OFF FREQ FOR 2 MINS, MISSING TURN FOR ILS TO RWY 22L AT ORD, IL.
Narrative: WHILE ON VECTOR FOR RWY 22L ORD, BECAME DISTRACTED IN ATTEMPTING TO IDENTIFY ISL RWY 22L LOC AND TEMPORARILY (2 MINS OR LESS) LOST CONTACT WITH ORD APCH. VHF COM 1 XFER SWITCH SOMEHOW INADVERTENTLY PLACED TO TWR FREQ. BECAUSE OF DISTR WITH IDENTIFYING LOC WE CONTINUED ON ASSIGNED HDG WHICH TOOK US THROUGH THE LOC ON 340 DEG HDG AT 3000 FT MSL ASSIGNED. WE DISCOVERED THE ERROR WHEN WE RECOGNIZED THAT WE WERE ON TWR-ACFT COM AND WERE ADVISED OF TA (ACR Y MD8O ON FINAL FOR RWY 22L.) CLOSEST PT 3 NM 900 FT MSL. RECONTACTED ORD APCH AND WAS VECTORED BACK TO ILS RWY 22L. CAUSES: 1) INADVERTENTLY TRANSFERRED VHF COM 1 TO PRESELECTED TWR FREQ 2) BECOMING DISTRACTED BY WRONG IDENT (RWY 4) FOR RWY 22L LOC, TO THE PT OF NOT RECOGNIZING THAT RADIO TRANSMISSIONS FOR COM 1 WERE TWR, NOT APCH CTL AND TAKING TIMELY CORRECTIVE ACTION.
