Narrative:
At 1000 ft AGL in pattern at hky, noticed and heard loud bang -- like a backfire sound. Loss of power noticed as there was little response from throttle advancement. Checked gauges and decided to land immediately. Normal landing made and cleared runway. No traffic conflicts. Abided by all FARS. No aircraft damage except for air intake ducting hanging down under carburetor. Apparently, it was knocked or blown loose in-flight. This could have caused the disruption of airflow to the engine causing damage.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: BOEING STEARMAN PLT MADE A FORCED RETURN LAND AFTER THE ENG LOST PWR AND FAILED TO RESPOND TO THROTTLE CTL MOVEMENT AFTER HEARING A LOUD BANG.
Narrative: AT 1000 FT AGL IN PATTERN AT HKY, NOTICED AND HEARD LOUD BANG -- LIKE A BACKFIRE SOUND. LOSS OF PWR NOTICED AS THERE WAS LITTLE RESPONSE FROM THROTTLE ADVANCEMENT. CHKED GAUGES AND DECIDED TO LAND IMMEDIATELY. NORMAL LNDG MADE AND CLRED RWY. NO TFC CONFLICTS. ABIDED BY ALL FARS. NO ACFT DAMAGE EXCEPT FOR AIR INTAKE DUCTING HANGING DOWN UNDER CARB. APPARENTLY, IT WAS KNOCKED OR BLOWN LOOSE INFLT. THIS COULD HAVE CAUSED THE DISRUPTION OF AIRFLOW TO THE ENG CAUSING DAMAGE.
