Narrative:
When entering the airport's airspace I was instructed by ATC to enter a base for runway 14. I started to head for what I believed to be runway 14. The controller asked if I was going to runway 14 and I replied that I believed I was. By the questions that were asked by the controller I was lead to believe that he had visual contact with me. He never gave any suggestion that I was approaching the wrong end of the runway. When entering base, for what I believed to be runway 14, an aircraft was climbing out. I then realized that I had made an approach to the wrong end of the runway. I turned left and descended to make sure a collision was avoided. I believe that the controller was not clear in his instructions and therefore caused me to become confused and cause a potentially dangerous situation.

Title: A LOW TIME C152 PVT PLT ENTERS BASE FOR THE WRONG RWY, REVERSING NUMBERS AND APCHING RWY 32 WHEN CLRED FOR RWY 14 AT RAP, SD.
Narrative: WHEN ENTERING THE ARPT'S AIRSPACE I WAS INSTRUCTED BY ATC TO ENTER A BASE FOR RWY 14. I STARTED TO HEAD FOR WHAT I BELIEVED TO BE RWY 14. THE CTLR ASKED IF I WAS GOING TO RWY 14 AND I REPLIED THAT I BELIEVED I WAS. BY THE QUESTIONS THAT WERE ASKED BY THE CTLR I WAS LEAD TO BELIEVE THAT HE HAD VISUAL CONTACT WITH ME. HE NEVER GAVE ANY SUGGESTION THAT I WAS APCHING THE WRONG END OF THE RWY. WHEN ENTERING BASE, FOR WHAT I BELIEVED TO BE RWY 14, AN ACFT WAS CLBING OUT. I THEN REALIZED THAT I HAD MADE AN APCH TO THE WRONG END OF THE RWY. I TURNED LEFT AND DSNDED TO MAKE SURE A COLLISION WAS AVOIDED. I BELIEVE THAT THE CTLR WAS NOT CLEAR IN HIS INSTRUCTIONS AND THEREFORE CAUSED ME TO BECOME CONFUSED AND CAUSE A POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS SIT.
