Narrative:

Boarding passenger flight mdw-atl. Plane moved, and my I heard a snapping noise. On investigation, I found the jetway had not automatic leveled, and the passenger boarding door was in contact with the jetway. The boarding agent lowered the jetway, and I inspected the door. The door was fine -- ok both open and closed -- but the gust lock had sheared. With no wind, using jetways in mdw and atl, I elected to go to atl. The gust lock was changed in atl. I had not checked the MEL's, called dispatch, maintenance, or talked to my copilot about the door problem. Lack of proper focus, and good CRM would have prevented this action, which in retrospect was not an MEL or aircraft moveable item.
