Narrative:
We were level at 17000 ft when I thought I heard controller clear us down to 15000 ft. I didn't hear anyone else reply, so I stated 'air carrier xyz, down to 15000 ft.' there was no answer and I stared down. Out of 16500 ft, the controller informed us to climb back to 17000 ft. He was working an air carrier xya on a different frequency. That's why I didn't hear a reply. I'll get a definite confirmation next time. Controller was not upset and no conflict occurred.
