Narrative:
Landing dulles on runway 1R, cleared runway at taxiway K3 to taxiway K to taxiway east. Received clearance to ground control then to gate control who cleared us to the gate. I noticed a B747 at gate and seemed to be sticking out further from the gate than normal, but passable. I did not notice that aircraft was on pushback, but did maneuver my aircraft to left of centerline approximately 6-8 ft. The first officer advised that it would be close, so I squeezed further away from centerline and thought we would clear. The aircraft struck the tail of B747. We stopped and got a call from a flight attendant that we had struck and there was no fuel leaking. I realized I should have gotten a guideman to come out and assist. I don't know if the B747 stopped or continued to push during our taxi past his position. Taxied our aircraft to gate on our own power.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: B777 WING STRIKES TAIL OF B747 WHILE TAXIING PAST B747 BEING PUSHED BACK FROM GATE. BOTH ACFT RECEIVED MINOR DAMAGE.
Narrative: LNDG DULLES ON RWY 1R, CLRED RWY AT TXWY K3 TO TXWY K TO TXWY E. RECEIVED CLRNC TO GND CTL THEN TO GATE CTL WHO CLRED US TO THE GATE. I NOTICED A B747 AT GATE AND SEEMED TO BE STICKING OUT FURTHER FROM THE GATE THAN NORMAL, BUT PASSABLE. I DID NOT NOTICE THAT ACFT WAS ON PUSHBACK, BUT DID MANEUVER MY ACFT TO L OF CTRLINE APPROX 6-8 FT. THE FO ADVISED THAT IT WOULD BE CLOSE, SO I SQUEEZED FURTHER AWAY FROM CTRLINE AND THOUGHT WE WOULD CLR. THE ACFT STRUCK THE TAIL OF B747. WE STOPPED AND GOT A CALL FROM A FLT ATTENDANT THAT WE HAD STRUCK AND THERE WAS NO FUEL LEAKING. I REALIZED I SHOULD HAVE GOTTEN A GUIDEMAN TO COME OUT AND ASSIST. I DON'T KNOW IF THE B747 STOPPED OR CONTINUED TO PUSH DURING OUR TAXI PAST HIS POS. TAXIED OUR ACFT TO GATE ON OUR OWN PWR.
