Narrative:

Controller restr us to 180 KTS to 5 NM final. This puts the aircraft 50 KTS above approach speed just before starting down at birdd on a steeper than normal glide path. We started slowing early in order to achieve approach speed before descent on final. Controller asked us about our speed vice the clearance. We should have informed him earlier about our slowdown. However, believe the clearance was not in the best interest of a safe approach in accordance with company guidelines.

Title: B757 FLC REDUCE SPD PRIOR TO 5 MI FINAL TO STABILIZE APCH FOR LNDG WITHOUT ADVISING MIA.

Narrative: CTLR RESTR US TO 180 KTS TO 5 NM FINAL. THIS PUTS THE ACFT 50 KTS ABOVE APCH SPD JUST BEFORE STARTING DOWN AT BIRDD ON A STEEPER THAN NORMAL GLIDE PATH. WE STARTED SLOWING EARLY IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE APCH SPD BEFORE DSCNT ON FINAL. CTLR ASKED US ABOUT OUR SPD VICE THE CLRNC. WE SHOULD HAVE INFORMED HIM EARLIER ABOUT OUR SLOWDOWN. HOWEVER, BELIEVE THE CLRNC WAS NOT IN THE BEST INTEREST OF A SAFE APCH IN ACCORDANCE WITH COMPANY GUIDELINES.
