Narrative:
Cargo compartment overheat. While taxiing to runway 4L, EICAS message 'forward cargo compartment overheat' with associated cargo heat 'inoperative' annunciated on overhead annunciator panel. Followed procedures, light did not extinguish. Requested crash fire rescue equipment to standby with thermal image to determine if actual fire, overheat, etc. Taxied back to gate uneventfully. Emergency was declared when overheat light did not extinguish in a reasonable amount of time.

Title: B767 CREW HAD A CARGO COMPARTMENT OVERHEAT WARNING ON THE GND AT JFK.
Narrative: CARGO COMPARTMENT OVERHEAT. WHILE TAXIING TO RWY 4L, EICAS MESSAGE 'FORWARD CARGO COMPARTMENT OVERHEAT' WITH ASSOCIATED CARGO HEAT 'INOP' ANNUNCIATED ON OVERHEAD ANNUNCIATOR PANEL. FOLLOWED PROCS, LIGHT DID NOT EXTINGUISH. REQUESTED CFR TO STANDBY WITH THERMAL IMAGE TO DETERMINE IF ACTUAL FIRE, OVERHEAT, ETC. TAXIED BACK TO GATE UNEVENTFULLY. EMER WAS DECLARED WHEN OVERHEAT LIGHT DID NOT EXTINGUISH IN A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME.
