Narrative:
Air carrier X, a scheduled departure out of ZZZ, requested a push clearance off gate. The equipment in the ramp tower, showed the aircraft to be at gate xo. The aircraft was issued a push clearance and backed off X2. At the time, the ramp controller had another aircraft to pass directly behind X2 wbound, but saw that air carrier X was coming off gate X2 and caught the error. Traffic was light with only a few movements on the ramp. During a busy arrival/departure bank however, we could have had a problem.
