Narrative:
During a departure climb from smo runway 21, smo tower notified us of a class B airspace incursion and advised an immediate right turn. While on this VFR climb, my attitude indicator failed/tumbled, which caused a distraction. This resulted in a delayed right turn. After being advised of the issue, we did an immediate right turn and proceeded to san jose in VFR conditions. I immediately took the airplane to an avionics repair station in san jose to replace the defective attitude indicator. Instrument failure provided a strong distraction which caused me to miss my turn point by just a few tenths of a mi.
