Narrative:

The final approach to runway 5 was a bit high, so in an effort to correct this, the pilot took power out early. Full flaps were added and a normal descent continued. The problem arose when the pilot misjudged how fast the descent actually was and failed to begin the flare accordingly. The nose gear hit the runway first and caused the plane to bounce approximately 5-7 ft off the runway. Efforts were made by the pilot to re-flare and salvage the landing, but with no airspeed the plane did not respond and continued to porpoise down the runway. After 5 bounces the plane stopped and the pilot taxied off the runway normally to park the plane and have it inspected. There was damage found where the tail tie-down had hit the runway and bent to the side. As a student pilot with low hours, the need to add power and go around after the first high bounce was not realized. Further training dealing with 'less than perfect' lndgs in a controled and safe manner has ensued to make sure this type of situation is never allowed to develop again.

Title: STUDENT PLT OF A PIPER PA28 LOST CTL OF ACFT DURING LNDG TOUCHDOWN CAUSING DAMAGE TO THE TAILSKID TIE-DOWN RING.

Narrative: THE FINAL APCH TO RWY 5 WAS A BIT HIGH, SO IN AN EFFORT TO CORRECT THIS, THE PLT TOOK PWR OUT EARLY. FULL FLAPS WERE ADDED AND A NORMAL DSCNT CONTINUED. THE PROB AROSE WHEN THE PLT MISJUDGED HOW FAST THE DSCNT ACTUALLY WAS AND FAILED TO BEGIN THE FLARE ACCORDINGLY. THE NOSE GEAR HIT THE RWY FIRST AND CAUSED THE PLANE TO BOUNCE APPROX 5-7 FT OFF THE RWY. EFFORTS WERE MADE BY THE PLT TO RE-FLARE AND SALVAGE THE LNDG, BUT WITH NO AIRSPD THE PLANE DID NOT RESPOND AND CONTINUED TO PORPOISE DOWN THE RWY. AFTER 5 BOUNCES THE PLANE STOPPED AND THE PLT TAXIED OFF THE RWY NORMALLY TO PARK THE PLANE AND HAVE IT INSPECTED. THERE WAS DAMAGE FOUND WHERE THE TAIL TIE-DOWN HAD HIT THE RWY AND BENT TO THE SIDE. AS A STUDENT PLT WITH LOW HRS, THE NEED TO ADD PWR AND GO AROUND AFTER THE FIRST HIGH BOUNCE WAS NOT REALIZED. FURTHER TRAINING DEALING WITH 'LESS THAN PERFECT' LNDGS IN A CTLED AND SAFE MANNER HAS ENSUED TO MAKE SURE THIS TYPE OF SIT IS NEVER ALLOWED TO DEVELOP AGAIN.
