Narrative:
On original annual inspection following effective date of airworthiness directive, I misread the airworthiness directive and did not perform required inspection using lycoming msb 505B as specified in airworthiness directive. This omission continued for each annual thereafter, until discovered in a pre-purchase inspection by a local shop on a list of discrepancies given to the owner. The local shop is remedying the failure to comply with airworthiness directive 98-02-08 for the new owner. I failed to recognize that the 0320H at 160 horsepwr was in this airworthiness directive, '320 series limited to 160 horsepwr.' I give no excuse for my omission. I had a copy of the airworthiness directive sent to me as an owner of a C172L and dismissed it, as my aircraft and all other C172 aircraft I perform annual inspections on are rated at 150 horsepwr.
