Narrative:
On climb out through 14000 ft, received multiple messages on FMS indicating position (FMS) IRS error. As we began to investigate, the aircraft began to turn direct to oal VOR. The turn was supposed to begin at czq VOR, but DME indicated we were still 40 mi north of czq. I asked the copilot to re-initialize her FMS, and shortly thereafter, she mentioned her FMS now indicated we were not yet at czq. This is when ATC asked us to make a right turn back direct to czq. At this point, I went to 'raw data' and when I was established on course, found that the IRS position differed from the GPS by 40 NM! The FMS was initialized by the IRS, therefore, it was also 40 NM off. I was not present during IRS/FMS initialization and did not catch the discrepancy after engine start (that's when I finished the passenger brief and sat in my seat). I will always check FMS position prior to taxi.
