Narrative:

First officer was PF. We were given clearance to cross 30 NM west of jvl at FL240 (we were at FL290). Altitude was entered into the altitude window and FMS was programmed. The flight attendant in charge came to the flight deck to discuss arrangements for handicapped passenger. During conversation, ATC called and asked us when we were going to start down. First officer initiated immediate descent and we missed the crossing restr by 2 mi. There were no conflicts and we were immediately switched over to approach. To prevent this type of thing, I guess it would be best to confer with the flight attendants prior to top of descent regarding any special needs.
