Narrative:

Climbing to 5000 ft on departure, I was looking outside to miss a building cumulo nimbus and look for 2 TCASII aircraft. Passing 4800 ft, I started to level off. We climbed to approximately 5300 ft before descending to 5000 ft. ATC asked our altitude and cleared us to 6000 ft. Conflict traffic was at 11 O'clock position and 7000 ft. We should have made the 4000-5000 ft call. I should have been inside flying instead of looking outside.
