Narrative:
Location: runway 12L, taxiway P2 msp. After rollout on runway 12L, we exited at taxiway P2. After crossing hold short line, tower informed us that he (the tower controller) should have told us not to exit there. We noticed some vehicles on the taxiway P. He told us to hold our position while he spoke with the airport commission to get us back onto the runway for back taxi. They moved their vehicle and we were cleared onto taxiway P to taxiway P1 back onto the runway and back taxied to taxiway P4 and to the gate. None of the construction was on the taxiway, only the vehicles and equipment. No NOTAMS or information on this taxiway closure or construction was on the ATIS or any field information or our paperwork. We did not come close or in any contact with any equipment. An air carrier X aircraft landing after us was informed not to turn at taxiway P1 or taxiway P2, but to make a 180 degree turn and back taxi.
