Narrative:
Immediately after takeoff, at approximately 500 ft AGL, we had an overheat indication on the #1 engine. The captain retarded the throttle approximately 1/2 way back towards idle. We then received a #1 engine fail message. During the process of declaring the emergency, the overheat checklist turned white. I cleared the checklist and proceeded to run the engine fail checklist which was still red titled. At this point I observed the engine was operating normally. We checked the engine for vibration or any signs of damage and found none. So we returned to stl for a visual approach and landing. Approach, landing and taxi back were uneventful. Supplemental information from acn 518549: a #1 engine fail warning was received next and an emergency was declared. The #1 engine subsequently relit and a precautionary landing on runway 30L was made uneventfully. After the #1 engine was running again, it operated with no abnormal indications. The restart was automatic and occurred before the crew had gotten very far in the checklist. There were no abnormal external indications as reported by the crew at stl.

Title: AN F100 CREW EXPERIENCED A #1 ENG OVERHEAT ON INITIAL CLB FROM STL.
Narrative: IMMEDIATELY AFTER TKOF, AT APPROX 500 FT AGL, WE HAD AN OVERHEAT INDICATION ON THE #1 ENG. THE CAPT RETARDED THE THROTTLE APPROX 1/2 WAY BACK TOWARDS IDLE. WE THEN RECEIVED A #1 ENG FAIL MESSAGE. DURING THE PROCESS OF DECLARING THE EMER, THE OVERHEAT CHKLIST TURNED WHITE. I CLRED THE CHKLIST AND PROCEEDED TO RUN THE ENG FAIL CHKLIST WHICH WAS STILL RED TITLED. AT THIS POINT I OBSERVED THE ENG WAS OPERATING NORMALLY. WE CHKED THE ENG FOR VIBRATION OR ANY SIGNS OF DAMAGE AND FOUND NONE. SO WE RETURNED TO STL FOR A VISUAL APCH AND LNDG. APCH, LNDG AND TAXI BACK WERE UNEVENTFUL. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 518549: A #1 ENG FAIL WARNING WAS RECEIVED NEXT AND AN EMER WAS DECLARED. THE #1 ENG SUBSEQUENTLY RELIT AND A PRECAUTIONARY LNDG ON RWY 30L WAS MADE UNEVENTFULLY. AFTER THE #1 ENG WAS RUNNING AGAIN, IT OPERATED WITH NO ABNORMAL INDICATIONS. THE RESTART WAS AUTOMATIC AND OCCURRED BEFORE THE CREW HAD GOTTEN VERY FAR IN THE CHKLIST. THERE WERE NO ABNORMAL EXTERNAL INDICATIONS AS RPTED BY THE CREW AT STL.
