Narrative:
IFR flight plan laf to bak. Cap ferry flight, single pilot IFR. WX VFR/IFR with buildups and cell activity developing. Filed: bvt.V51.bak. Given vectors southwest of ind. Requested 7000 ft, asked to stay on top and visual of buildups. ATC was unable due to traffic. Vectors to south were ok, but when told to turn east after abeam ind, WX was not good. Attempted to cancel IFR. Many others calls on frequency due to route change requests for WX. Microphone switch was intermittent on yoke. ATC missed cancellation call and for a few mins I was climbing out of altitude and changing heading for WX while trying to cancel. Frequency was busy, ATC was busy, I was busy (single pilot IFR) and bad microphone switch all contributed to ATC IFR cancellation -- was VFR all of the time. Finally canceled and proceeded VFR with advisories.

Title: A C172 CFI PLT INCURS SOME ANXIETY IN IND APCH CTL WHEN ATC DID NOT HEAR HIM CANCELING HIS IFR CLRNC SO AS TO LEAVE HIS ASSIGNED ALT AND HDG WHILE DETOURING SOME TSTM ACTIVITY SW OF VHP, IN.
Narrative: IFR FLT PLAN LAF TO BAK. CAP FERRY FLT, SINGLE PLT IFR. WX VFR/IFR WITH BUILDUPS AND CELL ACTIVITY DEVELOPING. FILED: BVT.V51.BAK. GIVEN VECTORS SW OF IND. REQUESTED 7000 FT, ASKED TO STAY ON TOP AND VISUAL OF BUILDUPS. ATC WAS UNABLE DUE TO TFC. VECTORS TO S WERE OK, BUT WHEN TOLD TO TURN E AFTER ABEAM IND, WX WAS NOT GOOD. ATTEMPTED TO CANCEL IFR. MANY OTHERS CALLS ON FREQ DUE TO RTE CHANGE REQUESTS FOR WX. MIKE SWITCH WAS INTERMITTENT ON YOKE. ATC MISSED CANCELLATION CALL AND FOR A FEW MINS I WAS CLBING OUT OF ALT AND CHANGING HDG FOR WX WHILE TRYING TO CANCEL. FREQ WAS BUSY, ATC WAS BUSY, I WAS BUSY (SINGLE PLT IFR) AND BAD MIKE SWITCH ALL CONTRIBUTED TO ATC IFR CANCELLATION -- WAS VFR ALL OF THE TIME. FINALLY CANCELED AND PROCEEDED VFR WITH ADVISORIES.
