Narrative:
Landed runway 19 at iad. Cleared Y5, parking gate. Ground cleared us to hold short of taxiway east on taxiway Y and call ramp tower. Ramp cleared us to gate from the taxiway east due to obstruction on taxiway east of gate. Clearance from ramp tower was eastbound on taxiway C, transition to taxiway D after construction. Right on taxiway J, right on taxiway east, to gate. After complying, we realized that ramp had cleared us to use a taxiway (J) that is controled by ground.
