Narrative:
Prior to flight, student received NOTAMS for 31A and advised me that the airport was closed some wkends. Approaching the airport, I did not see yellow X's that accompany a closed runway. After departure from the airport, someone on unicom contacted us stating that they were closed and if we had not seen the white X's they had placed on the airport. After circling the airport, I noticed 2 white X's placed in local fields a few yards from the active runway. Crew needed more up-to-date NOTAMS for airport and runway needed to be marked correctly.
