Narrative:

While at 16500 ft at cruise flight, we received from ATC a report of traffic, an airbus at 11 O'clock position, and 15 mi and climbing. Also, ATC advised the airbus of our position. The airbus acknowledged and stated that he had the traffic on TCASII, but not in sight and that they were going to level off at 16000 ft. ATC acknowledged the transmission and advised the airbus that once he had us in sight, he was cleared to continue with his climb. Around under 1 min, we saw the airbus approaching us between 9-12 O'clock position and about 3 mi from our position, and what it looked to be right at our altitude. About 20 seconds passed and I started to make a 30 degree bank left turn, and as the turn progressed the airbus continued to become closer, so a 90 degree bank was made to avoid a collision. I calculate that the estimated distance between the 2 aircraft was approximately 100 ft. After we passed the airbus, the airbus crew started complaining to ATC of the incident. The only thing that we stated to ATC was that a 90 degree bank left turn had to be made to avoid the collision.

Narrative: WHILE AT 16500 FT AT CRUISE FLT, WE RECEIVED FROM ATC A RPT OF TFC, AN AIRBUS AT 11 O'CLOCK POS, AND 15 MI AND CLBING. ALSO, ATC ADVISED THE AIRBUS OF OUR POS. THE AIRBUS ACKNOWLEDGED AND STATED THAT HE HAD THE TFC ON TCASII, BUT NOT IN SIGHT AND THAT THEY WERE GOING TO LEVEL OFF AT 16000 FT. ATC ACKNOWLEDGED THE XMISSION AND ADVISED THE AIRBUS THAT ONCE HE HAD US IN SIGHT, HE WAS CLRED TO CONTINUE WITH HIS CLB. AROUND UNDER 1 MIN, WE SAW THE AIRBUS APCHING US BTWN 9-12 O'CLOCK POS AND ABOUT 3 MI FROM OUR POS, AND WHAT IT LOOKED TO BE RIGHT AT OUR ALT. ABOUT 20 SECONDS PASSED AND I STARTED TO MAKE A 30 DEG BANK L TURN, AND AS THE TURN PROGRESSED THE AIRBUS CONTINUED TO BECOME CLOSER, SO A 90 DEG BANK WAS MADE TO AVOID A COLLISION. I CALCULATE THAT THE ESTIMATED DISTANCE BTWN THE 2 ACFT WAS APPROX 100 FT. AFTER WE PASSED THE AIRBUS, THE AIRBUS CREW STARTED COMPLAINING TO ATC OF THE INCIDENT.
