Narrative:
On a climb, departing gso for ZZZ we were assigned a higher altitude. The captain was handling the radios, I was flying. I heard him respond to greensboro 16000 ft and I set 16000 ft in the altitude window. I said '16000,' he pointed at the altitude and repeated '16000.' at 13200 ft gso asked our altitude, the captain responded '13200 ft.' gso came back 'I assigned you 13000 ft. Level off at 14000 ft, there's other traffic.' the traffic was not nearby. The captain and I discussed that he had responded 16000 ft to the controller's altitude assignment, I heard 16000 ft and set it in the altitude window. There was no correction of his repeated clearance. The occurrence could have been avoided if the controller had corrected the readback, if he did assign us to 13000 ft. The captain and myself must always listen carefully and read back all clrncs.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A BA4100 FLT CREW UNDERSTOOD AND READ BACK A CLBING CLRNC TO 16000 FT, BUT THE GSO TRACON CTLR THOUGHT HE ISSUED 13000 FT.
Narrative: ON A CLB, DEPARTING GSO FOR ZZZ WE WERE ASSIGNED A HIGHER ALT. THE CAPT WAS HANDLING THE RADIOS, I WAS FLYING. I HEARD HIM RESPOND TO GREENSBORO 16000 FT AND I SET 16000 FT IN THE ALT WINDOW. I SAID '16000,' HE POINTED AT THE ALT AND REPEATED '16000.' AT 13200 FT GSO ASKED OUR ALT, THE CAPT RESPONDED '13200 FT.' GSO CAME BACK 'I ASSIGNED YOU 13000 FT. LEVEL OFF AT 14000 FT, THERE'S OTHER TFC.' THE TFC WAS NOT NEARBY. THE CAPT AND I DISCUSSED THAT HE HAD RESPONDED 16000 FT TO THE CTLR'S ALT ASSIGNMENT, I HEARD 16000 FT AND SET IT IN THE ALT WINDOW. THERE WAS NO CORRECTION OF HIS REPEATED CLRNC. THE OCCURRENCE COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED IF THE CTLR HAD CORRECTED THE READBACK, IF HE DID ASSIGN US TO 13000 FT. THE CAPT AND MYSELF MUST ALWAYS LISTEN CAREFULLY AND READ BACK ALL CLRNCS.
