Narrative:
ATC granted a pilot's discretion descent to FL240. He later gave us a new frequency. PNF (first officer) checked on with new controller 'at FL290,' neglecting to advise 'pilot's discretion to FL240.' when we (he) called out of '290 for 240' the controller was rather terse when inquiring what our assigned altitude was. It then occurred to us what we had not done when checking on. This was the first officer's first trip off IOE but I should have caught the omission!

Narrative: ATC GRANTED A PLT'S DISCRETION DSCNT TO FL240. HE LATER GAVE US A NEW FREQ. PNF (FO) CHKED ON WITH NEW CTLR 'AT FL290,' NEGLECTING TO ADVISE 'PLT'S DISCRETION TO FL240.' WHEN WE (HE) CALLED OUT OF '290 FOR 240' THE CTLR WAS RATHER TERSE WHEN INQUIRING WHAT OUR ASSIGNED ALT WAS. IT THEN OCCURRED TO US WHAT WE HAD NOT DONE WHEN CHKING ON. THIS WAS THE FO'S FIRST TRIP OFF IOE BUT I SHOULD HAVE CAUGHT THE OMISSION!
