Narrative:
Dfw ramp. After a late pushback from the gate, the ground man asked me to park the brakes. I responded and he cleared off the intercom. After the towbar had been disconnected but prior to a salute from ground man, I somehow thought I was cleared to taxi. I cannot explain why, but I released the parking brake and allowed the aircraft to slowly begin to move forward. I somehow had it in my head that we were cleared to go. Fortunately, the aircraft had barely begun to move when an alert ground man signaled me to set the brake and an alert tow tractor driver moved the tractor out of the way. Since the aircraft had already been disconnected, no one was hurt and there was no damage done. After that, the normal departure salute was given and taxi was begun. I cannot explain how I could have done something like this but it shook me up enough that I will be extra careful from now on. I am thankful no one was injured.
