Narrative:

Handoff by clt approach to concord tower for visual landing to runway 20. Tower apparently asked for 2 mi advisory when on right base for runway 20. Aircraft was already only 2-3 mi on right base at handoff and pilot, though he had been cleared to land, landed without incident but was then advised by tower of non compliance at 2 mi and had been given no clearance to land. Contributing factors were 1) aircraft was already near reporting point at handoff. 2) although pilot ws aware of concord's requesting distance advisories on IFR approachs he hadn't had such a request during a VFR approach at concord in past 9 months. Corrective action: better attention/understanding of tower instructions on part of pilot.

Narrative: HDOF BY CLT APCH TO CONCORD TWR FOR VISUAL LNDG TO RWY 20. TWR APPARENTLY ASKED FOR 2 MI ADVISORY WHEN ON R BASE FOR RWY 20. ACFT WAS ALREADY ONLY 2-3 MI ON R BASE AT HDOF AND PLT, THOUGH HE HAD BEEN CLRED TO LAND, LANDED WITHOUT INCIDENT BUT WAS THEN ADVISED BY TWR OF NON COMPLIANCE AT 2 MI AND HAD BEEN GIVEN NO CLRNC TO LAND. CONTRIBUTING FACTORS WERE 1) ACFT WAS ALREADY NEAR RPTING POINT AT HDOF. 2) ALTHOUGH PLT WS AWARE OF CONCORD'S REQUESTING DISTANCE ADVISORIES ON IFR APCHS HE HADN'T HAD SUCH A REQUEST DURING A VFR APCH AT CONCORD IN PAST 9 MONTHS. CORRECTIVE ACTION: BETTER ATTN/UNDERSTANDING OF TWR INSTRUCTIONS ON PART OF PLT.
