Narrative:
During cruise flight on heading deviating for WX received clearance to proceed direct to lakeland. Its identifier is lal. Our filed route of flight was to proceed over llake intersection. The PF selected llake on direct to page. The PNF confirmed selection and we proceeded direct. Center asked to confirm proceeding direct lakeland to which we acknowledged affirmative. He pointed out we were in fact going to a like sounding intersection instead of the VOR to which we had been cleared. The error made on both of our parts was in not confirming the correct clearance name and assuming it was the similar sounding intersection which was part of our flight plan.
