Narrative:
On takeoff roll, we had just passsed V2 with the nosewheel leaving the runway, when the #1 engine exploded and lost all power. We continued the takeoff with #2 operating normally. At approximately 1500 ft AGL, we turned crosswind and downwind after declaring an emergency. All checklists were completed and a 5 mi final was accomplished to southeast landing. Emergency equipment met us at the department end of runway 17. All clear. Taxi to gate normal. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the reporter stated the engine was a pratt and whitney JT8D-15 and the failure was in the 3RD and 4TH stage compressor section. The reporter said the failure was contained.
