Narrative:
On descent into maui, we were given a speed restriction of 210 KTS, and a heading to intercept localizer from maui approach. We were then given a speed restriction of 170 KTS, which caused us to get above our descent profile. We began configuring the aircraft to flaps 5 degrees and slowing, while trying to descend. At approximately 1500 ft AGL, approach asked our speed. We replied '180 KTS.' they then turned us fast and instructed us to climb to 2000 ft. I advised approach I had the field in sight and requested a visual. They then turned us south and instructed us to climb to 3000 ft. I again told approach I have the field in sight and asked where the traffic was. They refused to provide any traffic information and instructed me to climb to 4000 ft and fly heading 180 degrees. The approach controller then vectored us approximately 12 mi south of the airport and turned us in on vectors for the ILS, 10 mi in trail of an airplane that was originally following us.

AT APPROX 1500 FT AGL, APCH ASKED OUR SPEED. WE REPLIED '180 KTS.' THEY THEN TURNED US FAST AND INSTRUCTED US TO CLIMB TO 2000 FT. I ADVISED APCH I HAD THE FIELD IN SIGHT AND REQUESTED A VISUAL. THEY THEN TURNED US SOUTH AND INSTRUCTED US TO CLIMB TO 3000 FT. I AGAIN TOLD APCH I HAVE THE FIELD IN SIGHT AND ASKED WHERE THE TFC WAS. THEY REFUSED TO PROVIDE ANY TFC INFORMATION AND INSTRUCTED ME TO CLIMB TO 4000 FT AND FLY HEADING 180 DEGS. THE APCH CTLR THEN VECTORED US APPROX 12 MI SOUTH OF THE ARPT AND TURNED US IN ON VECTORS FOR THE ILS, 10 MI IN TRAIL OF AN AIRPLANE THAT WAS ORIGINALLY FOLLOWING US.
