Narrative:
On pushback, ground control asked if we could accept runway 12L. Our loaded information and current accuload was for runway 12R. We checked takeoff data and we were legal, but we noticed that our current airport pages did not show runway 12L (a newly opened and lengthened runway). Therefore, we decided it would be best to get new performance numbers for runway 12L. During taxi out, there was some confusion by sjc operations as to what we needed, requiring 4 loads to be sent out. This required first officer to be on radio #2 with operations. Our original clearance was to taxi to runway 12L, hold short of taxiway M, switch to tower 124.0. After all that work to get runway 12L information, as we approached the depend, tower told us 'air carrier X, cross runway 12L, hold short of runway 12R.' first officer acknowledged. As we held short, tower asked, 'air carrier X, did ground control tell you to cross runway 12L?' I answered yes. They replied they never heard an answer. It was then we figured out that first officer had answered on #2 radio, but we both had heard the tower controller give us clearance to cross. Everything was resolved when it became clear that tower had asked us that question to make sure his ground controller had not cleared us to cross. At this point, we were told there was no problem. Ironically, the next day we read about the new runway opening up in the correct aviation publication -- nothing from commercial chart company or air carrier X advised us on the new runway.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: B737 CREW MAY HAVE HAD A RWY INCURSION ON NEWLY OPENED RWY 12L AT SJC. RWY WAS NOT DEPICTED ON ARPT PLATE PAGE.
Narrative: ON PUSHBACK, GND CTL ASKED IF WE COULD ACCEPT RWY 12L. OUR LOADED INFO AND CURRENT ACCULOAD WAS FOR RWY 12R. WE CHKED TKOF DATA AND WE WERE LEGAL, BUT WE NOTICED THAT OUR CURRENT ARPT PAGES DID NOT SHOW RWY 12L (A NEWLY OPENED AND LENGTHENED RWY). THEREFORE, WE DECIDED IT WOULD BE BEST TO GET NEW PERFORMANCE NUMBERS FOR RWY 12L. DURING TAXI OUT, THERE WAS SOME CONFUSION BY SJC OPS AS TO WHAT WE NEEDED, REQUIRING 4 LOADS TO BE SENT OUT. THIS REQUIRED FO TO BE ON RADIO #2 WITH OPS. OUR ORIGINAL CLRNC WAS TO TAXI TO RWY 12L, HOLD SHORT OF TXWY M, SWITCH TO TWR 124.0. AFTER ALL THAT WORK TO GET RWY 12L INFO, AS WE APCHED THE DEPEND, TWR TOLD US 'ACR X, CROSS RWY 12L, HOLD SHORT OF RWY 12R.' FO ACKNOWLEDGED. AS WE HELD SHORT, TWR ASKED, 'ACR X, DID GND CTL TELL YOU TO CROSS RWY 12L?' I ANSWERED YES. THEY REPLIED THEY NEVER HEARD AN ANSWER. IT WAS THEN WE FIGURED OUT THAT FO HAD ANSWERED ON #2 RADIO, BUT WE BOTH HAD HEARD THE TWR CTLR GIVE US CLRNC TO CROSS. EVERYTHING WAS RESOLVED WHEN IT BECAME CLR THAT TWR HAD ASKED US THAT QUESTION TO MAKE SURE HIS GND CTLR HAD NOT CLRED US TO CROSS. AT THIS POINT, WE WERE TOLD THERE WAS NO PROB. IRONICALLY, THE NEXT DAY WE READ ABOUT THE NEW RWY OPENING UP IN THE CORRECT AVIATION PUB -- NOTHING FROM COMMERCIAL CHART COMPANY OR ACR X ADVISED US ON THE NEW RWY.
