Narrative:

We were arriving from the northwest with atl approach control, being vectored for runway 8L. After given a heading of 180 degrees and airspeed of 180, the controller told us that we were being switched to runway 9R, and were given a speed of 250 KTS and 12000 ft. He then handled us off to the southern controller who slowed us back down and gave us 11000 and traffic at 10 O'clock and about 5 miles. The first officer stated that we appeared to be 'joining up' on the traffic. Shortly afterwards, we received a warning from TCASII telling us to climb. The first officer then climbed to 12000 ft as we kept the emb 120 in sight. The controller then told us to stay at 12000 ft and apologized. The controller was quite busy, and coupled with the fact that we were coming off the north side with the change in runways, added to the confusion.

Narrative: WE WERE ARRIVING FROM THE NORTHWEST WITH ATL APCH CTL, BEING VECTORED FOR RWY 8L. AFTER GIVEN A HEADING OF 180 DEGS AND AIRSPEED OF 180, THE CTLR TOLD US THAT WE WERE BEING SWITCHED TO RWY 9R, AND WERE GIVEN A SPEED OF 250 KTS AND 12000 FT. HE THEN HANDLED US OFF TO THE SOUTHERN CTLR WHO SLOWED US BACK DOWN AND GAVE US 11000 AND TRAFFIC AT 10 O'CLOCK AND ABOUT 5 MILES. THE FO STATED THAT WE APPEARED TO BE 'JOINING UP' ON THE TFC. SHORTLY AFTERWARDS, WE RECEIVED A WARNING FROM TCASII TELLING US TO CLIMB. THE FO THEN CLIMBED TO 12000 FT AS WE KEPT THE EMB 120 IN SIGHT. THE CTLR THEN TOLD US TO STAY AT 12000 FT AND APOLOGIZED. THE CTLR WAS QUITE BUSY, AND COUPLED WITH THE FACT THAT WE WERE COMING OFF THE NORTH SIDE WITH THE CHANGE IN RUNWAYS, ADDED TO THE CONFUSION.
