Narrative:
First officer landed on runway 17C at dfw. Tower controller instructed to hold short runway 17R at taxiway em. Held short at taxiway em and a B727 also holding short of runway 17R at taxiway el (the taxiway to my right). An aircraft departed runway 17R and tower controller cleared another aircraft 'into position and hold, traffic crossing downfield.' tower controller cleared B727 on taxiway el to cross runway 17R, and cleared us to cross runway 17R at taxiway em. Because B727 was to our right at taxiway el, was unable to view end of runway 17R. About 1/2 way across runway 17R (still unable to see end of runway 17R due to B727), tower controller told an aircraft to cancel takeoff clearance. After crossing runway 17R (with B727 now out of the way) I could view end of runway 17R and could see 2 aircraft on runway 17R -- one in position at very end of runway 17R and another in front (with takeoff lights on). Crossed runway safely and taxied to gate. Do not know if aircraft with takeoff clearance actually began takeoff roll.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: B757 CREW GEAR THE DFW LCL CTLR INSTRUCT TFC TO ABORT AND OBSERVE 2 ACFT IN POS ON THE RWY THEY JUST CROSSED.
Narrative: FO LANDED ON RWY 17C AT DFW. TWR CTLR INSTRUCTED TO HOLD SHORT RWY 17R AT TXWY EM. HELD SHORT AT TXWY EM AND A B727 ALSO HOLDING SHORT OF RWY 17R AT TXWY EL (THE TXWY TO MY R). AN ACFT DEPARTED RWY 17R AND TWR CTLR CLRED ANOTHER ACFT 'INTO POS AND HOLD, TFC XING DOWNFIELD.' TWR CTLR CLRED B727 ON TXWY EL TO CROSS RWY 17R, AND CLRED US TO CROSS RWY 17R AT TXWY EM. BECAUSE B727 WAS TO OUR R AT TXWY EL, WAS UNABLE TO VIEW END OF RWY 17R. ABOUT 1/2 WAY ACROSS RWY 17R (STILL UNABLE TO SEE END OF RWY 17R DUE TO B727), TWR CTLR TOLD AN ACFT TO CANCEL TKOF CLRNC. AFTER XING RWY 17R (WITH B727 NOW OUT OF THE WAY) I COULD VIEW END OF RWY 17R AND COULD SEE 2 ACFT ON RWY 17R -- ONE IN POS AT VERY END OF RWY 17R AND ANOTHER IN FRONT (WITH TKOF LIGHTS ON). CROSSED RWY SAFELY AND TAXIED TO GATE. DO NOT KNOW IF ACFT WITH TKOF CLRNC ACTUALLY BEGAN TKOF ROLL.
