Narrative:
Contacted rhv tower for landing at rhv. ATC communications were handled by student. This was his second time to use the radio. ATC informed us to make straight-in for runway 31R, and then immediately started to argue with us about our position. We were only 1 mi different from where he said we were. We reported 3 mi final, ATC cleared us to land runway 31R. We landed runway 31L. Normal runway for straight-in is runway 31L. There was no other aircraft in the class D airspace at the time. There was no conflict with other aircraft. The controllers change to runway 314 and unnecessary chastising about our position created an unnecessary environment in the cockpit during this training flight causing to land on the wrong runway.

Title: WRONG RWY APCH LNDG DEFINED BY INSTRUCTOR PLT OF A CITABRIA AS A RESULT OF ATC ATTITUDE AT RHV, CA.
Narrative: CONTACTED RHV TWR FOR LNDG AT RHV. ATC COMS WERE HANDLED BY STUDENT. THIS WAS HIS SECOND TIME TO USE THE RADIO. ATC INFORMED US TO MAKE STRAIGHT-IN FOR RWY 31R, AND THEN IMMEDIATELY STARTED TO ARGUE WITH US ABOUT OUR POS. WE WERE ONLY 1 MI DIFFERENT FROM WHERE HE SAID WE WERE. WE RPTED 3 MI FINAL, ATC CLRED US TO LAND RWY 31R. WE LANDED RWY 31L. NORMAL RWY FOR STRAIGHT-IN IS RWY 31L. THERE WAS NO OTHER ACFT IN THE CLASS D AIRSPACE AT THE TIME. THERE WAS NO CONFLICT WITH OTHER ACFT. THE CTLRS CHANGE TO RWY 314 AND UNNECESSARY CHASTISING ABOUT OUR POS CREATED AN UNNECESSARY ENVIRONMENT IN THE COCKPIT DURING THIS TRAINING FLT CAUSING TO LAND ON THE WRONG RWY.
