Narrative:

While at cruise in and out of cloud tops at FL260, the tail anti-ice fault illuminated. We accomplished the MFDU checklist and fault occurred again. We turned tail anti-ice off and requested higher altitude to remain clear of icing conditions. We were cleared to FL280 and later to FL310 which allowed us to remain clear of icing. We coordinated with ftw dispatch and ATC to avoid ice. We declared an emergency and took a rerte and descent to 8000 ft at sln to avoid clouds above the freezing level. We applied all checklists and made a normal landing at okc. Emergency was terminated at okc. FAA inspector on jump seat was pleased with the handling of the situation and had no additional suggestions or comment.
