Narrative:
On climb out we both thought we were given a clearance to climb and maintain 17000 ft. We were given traffic at 17000 ft on a diverging course at less than a mile. Upon realizing that there might have been an incorrect clearance given we disengaged the autoplt as we passed through 16000 ft. We climbed to 16300 ft before returning to 16000. The traffic was now behind our aircraft and within a minute or so we were given a climb clearance to FL230. Supplemental information from acn 526795: climbing on the prado 5 departure out of ont, center gave us a climb to 17000 ft. Passing 16000 ft we saw traffic on the TCAS at 17000 ft and approximately 1 mi. The autoplt was disengaged and I stopped the climb at 16300 ft then descended to 16000 ft. As the traffic passed overhead center called out the traffic and gave us a climb to FL230. ATC didn't make any comments except to say thank you. We did not have a TCAS alert.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A B737-300 FLC EXPERIENCES A POTENTIAL CONFLICT WITH OPPOSITE DIRECTION SAME ASSIGNED ALT TFC NEAR ONTARIO, LEVELING OFF LOW THINKING THAT THEIR CLRNC MAY HAVE BEEN MISINTERP WITH ZLA, CA.
Narrative: ON CLIMB OUT WE BOTH THOUGHT WE WERE GIVEN A CLRNC TO CLIMB AND MAINTAIN 17000 FT. WE WERE GIVEN TFC AT 17000 FT ON A DIVERGING COURSE AT LESS THAN A MILE. UPON REALIZING THAT THERE MIGHT HAVE BEEN AN INCORRECT CLRNC GIVEN WE DISENGAGED THE AUTOPLT AS WE PASSED THROUGH 16000 FT. WE CLIMBED TO 16300 FT BEFORE RETURNING TO 16000. THE TFC WAS NOW BEHIND OUR ACFT AND WITHIN A MINUTE OR SO WE WERE GIVEN A CLIMB CLRNC TO FL230. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 526795: CLIMBING ON THE PRADO 5 DEP OUT OF ONT, CENTER GAVE US A CLIMB TO 17000 FT. PASSING 16000 FT WE SAW TFC ON THE TCAS AT 17000 FT AND APPROX 1 MI. THE AUTOPLT WAS DISENGAGED AND I STOPPED THE CLIMB AT 16300 FT THEN DESCENDED TO 16000 FT. AS THE TFC PASSED OVERHEAD CENTER CALLED OUT THE TFC AND GAVE US A CLIMB TO FL230. ATC DIDN'T MAKE ANY COMMENTS EXCEPT TO SAY THANK YOU. WE DID NOT HAVE A TCAS ALERT.
