Narrative:
This was a nighttime taxi incident resulting in the wingtip of the aircraft striking a parked catering truck while being marshalled into a very tight parking jetway gate at seatac airport, wa. Our aircraft approached a painted lead in line under the direction of a marshaller. I noticed the truck parked behind the aircraft at the adjoining gate and directed the marshaller's attention to the potential problem. The marshaller repositioned himself for a clear view of the wingtip and the truck and motioned us to continue taxi. Satisfied that he was monitoring and maintaining clearance I proceeded very slowly fwd prepared to stop instantly if required. Impact occurred shortly afterward resulting in skin damage to the left wingtip. Later the marshaller admitted he was not familiar with this gate and that he mistakenly thought that if the aircraft was on the line it would clear all obstacles. I should not have relied on the marshaller and demanded the truck be moved.

Title: AN MD80 PIC EXPERIENCES A WING TIP STRIKE ON A CATERING TRUCK PARKED AT THE RAMP DURING A NIGHT OPERATION PARKING PROC AT SEA, WA.
Narrative: THIS WAS A NIGHTTIME TAXI INCIDENT RESULTING IN THE WINGTIP OF THE ACFT STRIKING A PARKED CATERING TRUCK WHILE BEING MARSHALLED INTO A VERY TIGHT PARKING JETWAY GATE AT SEATAC ARPT, WA. OUR ACFT APCHED A PAINTED LEAD IN LINE UNDER THE DIRECTION OF A MARSHALLER. I NOTICED THE TRUCK PARKED BEHIND THE ACFT AT THE ADJOINING GATE AND DIRECTED THE MARSHALLER'S ATTENTION TO THE POTENTIAL PROBLEM. THE MARSHALLER REPOSITIONED HIMSELF FOR A CLEAR VIEW OF THE WINGTIP AND THE TRUCK AND MOTIONED US TO CONTINUE TAXI. SATISFIED THAT HE WAS MONITORING AND MAINTAINING CLRNC I PROCEEDED VERY SLOWLY FWD PREPARED TO STOP INSTANTLY IF REQUIRED. IMPACT OCCURRED SHORTLY AFTERWARD RESULTING IN SKIN DAMAGE TO THE LEFT WINGTIP. LATER THE MARSHALLER ADMITTED HE WAS NOT FAMILIAR WITH THIS GATE AND THAT HE MISTAKENLY THOUGHT THAT IF THE ACFT WAS ON THE LINE IT WOULD CLEAR ALL OBSTACLES. I SHOULD NOT HAVE RELIED ON THE MARSHALLER AND DEMANDED THE TRUCK BE MOVED.
