Narrative:
During climb out on FLL9.fll departure procedure thndr transition was on 280 degree vector to intercept the 335 degree radial dhp to thndr. Encountered visual buildups at 12 O'clock 5 NM. Requested deviation with no response (frequency was very congested). First officer was flying and turned right to 315 degree heading. Was immediately queried by ATC as to heading. Replied 315 degrees. ATC requested turn to 270 degree heading. Replied unable due to WX and requested 290 degrees which was approved. Climb out continued uneventfully.
