Narrative:
The first officer reported that he had the airfield in sight. We were cleared for a visual approach. The captain lost visual of the airport after descending north of the airport. We were instructed to climb and turn northbound for another visual. Factors: highly lighted city area, hard to see runway at night on a visual approach.
