Narrative:

Missed the turn at 2 pt 5 DME on lga SID whitestone climb on departure from lga. Instructor pilot, captain, was PNF. The student, first officer, delayed turn beyond the 2.5 restr to turn to 040 degree heading. Had already engaged the autoplt and due to relative inexperience on aircraft, and that student had not flown as first officer in nearly 5 years, he was well behind aircraft in situational awareness and response. Initiated turn to approximately 4 to 4 pt 5 DME. Controller questioned turn, when already starting turn. Human factors: inexperience, slow situational awareness. Remiss in fully briefing departure due to instructor workload with student.
